Vermeer Named World Champion

Secaucus, NJ – Jana Foods, LLC. is proud to announce that Vermeer®, a cheese from the “A Dutch Masterpiece” line, has been selected as World Champion at the prestigious World Championship Cheese Contest in Madison, Wisconsin. Vermeer, produced by Royal Friesland Campina, is a mature cheese with a full-bodied taste, but with reduced fat and salt. This is the second time that “A Dutch Masterpiece” cheese has been voted the best cheese in the world; in 2004 the World Champion award went to Rembrandt Extra Aged Gouda.

Vermeer is a full-flavor gouda style cheese from Holland that is lower in fat, cholesterol and salt than the average medium aged gouda. Piet Nederhoed, plant manager at Steenderen, where the winning cheese is produced, is very happy with the prize: “We’re proud that we make this fantastic cheese. Apart from its full-bodied taste, what makes this cheese so special is the fact that it contains less fat and salt than mature Gouda cheese. Vermeer cheese is aged naturally for 22 weeks to achieve the best possible taste.” Vermeer was praised by Dan Konz from Minnesota, a contest judge, for its “nice, smooth, clean flavor.” He went on to say that “It had nice body and mouth-feel. A very clean taste.”

The World Championship Cheese Contest is held every two years in Madison, Wisconsin. The three day contest involved 40 judges from 17 nations and 10 US states grading 2,503 entries in 82 classes for flavor, texture, body and color. In previous years, the judging was the sole task of an expert jury. This year, visitors to the event were also allowed to try the cheese, which meant that 400 consumers were able to cast their vote.
