Matterhorn Nursery, long the gold standard among Hudson Valley garden centers, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Matt and Ronnie Horn, the owners of the 38-acre New Hempstead nursery , filed for the reorganization on Sept. 10 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York after the Town of Ramapo pulled out of a deal to purchase 15 acres of unused land from the Horns. The Horns planned to use the sale proceeds to provide cash flow as they made long-planned renovations to the nursery.
Matterhorn, which has been a much-admired part of the local gardening scene for 29 years, will remain open during the reorganization.
