It is with great sadness that we tell you of the passing of one our industry luminaries, John Minutaglio, aka John Mini.
John was a special and specific type of Renaissance man – one who read broadly and explored widely and at the same time, dug deeply into the topics important to him, like the art and science of building a successful business.
Unfailingly, John was a gentleman who nurtured the ideas and spirits of industry colleagues. His enthusiasm for professionalism was contagious.
As last year’s PIE keynote, John’s personal and industry leadership was manifest in his call to action – “commit yourself to constant improvement and change, excellence is the reward”.
Earlier this year John was selected for induction into PIA’s Interior Plantscape Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will be on Thursday, Aug. 13 at PIA Awards Gala in Las Vegas, NV.
His business, John Mini Distinctive Landscapes, has accumulated over 100 awards for quality and environmental improvements. John was selected Professional of the Year by Interior Business Magazine and selected a Trailblazer by PLANET. He was twice honored at the White House to accept National Landscape Awards from First Ladies Regan and Bush. John was particularly proud of the company's work at the Winter Garden, for which the company received multiple awards. John said that seeing the palms lifted off the trucks and returned to this iconic NYC garden after 9/11 was "one of the greatest moments of my life".
John always championed the landscape industry, spearheading initiatives such as ALCA and serving on boards of organizations such as Green Plants for Green Buildings and National Interiorscape Network. He is an active member of PLANET, US Green Buildings Council, NY American Society of Landscape Architects, PIA, Florida Nursery Growers and Landscape Association, BOMA NY, Metro Hort Group, OFA, Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, and Trout Unlimited.
