In a rustic building on the Teufel Holly Farms property near the Sylvan Highlands in Southwest Portland, 17 volunteers busily sorted through roses, carnations, lilies and other flowers Tuesday morning, discarding wilted plants, trimming stems, arranging flowers into bouquets and placing all their handiwork in vases.
Once complete, the flower bouquets will be delivered to hospice patients, brightening up what could be an otherwise dreary setting just in time for Valentine's Day.
This is The Bloom Project's mission, said founder Heidi Berkman: To give a person nearing the end of his or her life something pleasant to look at, and something to talk about other than the obvious.
