Turnover At Flower Auctions Drops In September

Flower and plant prices at the Dutch FloraHolland flower auctions disappointed once again last month, just as they did in August. The warm weather in early September, coupled with the ongoing economic uncertainty, is most likely to blame. Total export for the year nonetheless still stands at a plus of close to just 2 percent.

With 4 percent more flowers being traded on the auctions, the average price showed a downward trend, dropping by 2.8 cents to € 0,219 per stem. Total turnover for cut flowers dropped by a significant 7.5 percent in September as a result. Gerbera, Freesia and Lilies, particularly, recorded a disappointing price level because of the excess supply.

Both house and garden plants also managed to realize a smaller turnover than in the same month of 2010. The former dropping by 2 percent while supply decreased by 2.4 percent, and the latter dropping by 10.9 percent as supply volume fell by 4.2 percent. The average price for house plants now stands at € 1.60, and for garden plants at € 0,735.
