Artisan Meat-Maker Seed To Sausage Feted By Tastemakers

Within three years Seed to Sausage artisanal butcher Michael McKenzie has gone from making cured meats in his garage to having Ottawa food scene names like Steve Beckta take note. Now he’s winning awards.

McKenzie is one of two artisans ACE Bakery selected from 20 last week to receive business development support through its Artisan Incubator program. ACE started out as a small, family operation before being bought for $110 million by Loblaws’ parent company in 2010.

“Sometimes it’s a little daunting. We make everything by hand,” said McKenzie. ”We’re just making stuff and doing what we enjoy. I do want to make it more efficient. It doesn’t matter if it gets bigger. My idea of expansion would be having a retail store in Ottawa. Getting it to people is the biggest thing.”

McKenzie said he hopes to take advantage of the branding, distribution, marketing and business finance advice ACE is offering.
