Carnivores Rejoice: Cattle, Hog Prices Fall

The old adage "the best cure for high prices is high prices" could mean welcome relief for backyard grillers.

The market prices for hogs and cattle have dropped about 15 percent from record highs in the last month on a sudden increase in supply and apparent consumer resistance to rising prices for hamburger and sirloin.

That increase in supply might not cause meat prices to fall in time for Memorial Day cookouts. But it could forestall further increases in retail prices over a year ago that already amount to 25 percent for bacon, 10 percent for ground beef and ribs, 9 percent for pork chops and 8 percent for sirloin.
