Columbia Supermarkets Unaffected By Reis Meat Contamination

COLUMBIA — Columbia Hy-Vee, Gerbes and Walmart store managers said Sunday that their stores do not carry any meat products from Reis Meat Processing in Jackson.

State Public Health Laboratory testing of vacuum-packed chicken and ground pork products from Reis were found to contain unusually high levels of bacteria, the Department of Health and Senior Services said in a news release Friday.

*The contaminated products will be destroyed Monday, and the department advised consumers to throw away any contaminated meat they might have purchased.

Other goods produced by Reis, such as beef, sausage, bacon and turkey, were found to have normal levels of bacteria after testing.
