DNA Verification Guarantees Pork Truly Alberta-Grown

Albertans now have a DNA-verified way to ensure that the pork labelled Alberta-grown at the supermarket really does come from this province.

St. Albert-based pork processor Sturgeon Valley Pork says Alberta grocery chain Freson Bros. is the first retailer to carry its branded products with labels guaranteeing that it's homegrown, hormone-free and animal byproduct-free.

Sturgeon Valley Pork says it can guarantee its meat's origins and quality because it's among the first Canadian meat processors to use a genetic traceability system called DNA TraceBack developed by an Ireland-based company called IdentiGEN. Its meat products carry the DNA TraceBack logos.

"For the consumer, it's basically a verification system that backs up claims," said Dan Majeau, one of the principals at Sturgeon Valley Pork.
