North Dakota Pork Council Weighs In On Increased Tariffs

The new pork tariffs that are being imposed on the U.S. by China will go into effect Monday, and included in the 25 percent tariff is certain varieties of pork including pork liver and chopped pork.

Before China updated it's tariff on pork there was already a 12 percent tariff in place. The new tariff would raise it to 37 percent, this jump has the state's pork council concerned about how these changes will affect North Dakota producers.

"China raises a great deal of pork, but they don't raise enough for their demand, so they're definitely going to import pork, and where's it going to come from? Most likely it's going to come from the U.S. At what price we're unsure of. Will Chinese consumers be willing to pay the high price because of the quality of the product? A lot of that remains to be unseen," said Tamara Heins, North Dakota Pork Council.
