Award Winning Film Featuring Katie's Krops Founder Makes US Debut

Summerville, S.C. –  The Starfish Throwers, featuring Katie's Krops founder Katie Stagliano, will debut March 21 at 8pm ET/PT on DirecTV's Audience network. Recently named as the most heartwarming film of 2014 by the Huffington Post, The Starfish Throwers portrays the inspiring efforts of three individuals from different parts of the world and their unique efforts to feed the hungry.

Since the world premiere of The Starfish Throwers, directed by Emmy-award winning filmmaker Jesse Roesler, at the 2014 Thessaloniki Documentary Festival in Thessaloniki, Greece, it has won more than a dozen awards and been featured at more than 40 film festivals in more than a dozen countries around the world.

Stagliano, then a twelve year-old girl, is filmed along with a five-star chef and a retired schoolteacher. Witnessing the impact of their projects ripple far beyond their individual actions is an uplifting journey for viewers. Stagliano shares her dream to restore hope to the hopeless in an unexpected way through her efforts to end hunger one garden at a time by founding the non-profit 501c (3) organization, Katie’s Krops.

“The experience has been both humbling and unforgettable,” says Roesler. “While many of us have put aside some of those innocent dreams of changing the world and making a difference, I believe that sharing these stories will help us all to rediscover our own potential to affect positive change.” Stagliano has deep roots in the produce industry involving several partners contributing to her dream of 500 gardens across all 50 states. “You never know what can grow from just one thing,” says Stagliano in the film. “You could be inspiring hundreds with just one small action.”

Katie's Krops inspires kids to start gardens and donate the harvest to the underserved in their communities.  The organization introduces kids to agriculture and the environment, provides a sustainable solution to the problem of hunger, and teaches responsibility and compassion. Katie’s Krops now has over 80 youth-led gardens in 29 states from California to Maine.
