Walla Walla Sweet Onions are renowned for their flavor. In fact, while sweet onions might come from other regions of the country, by law they can’t be called Walla Walla Sweet Onions – even if they use Walla Walla Sweet seeds. In 1995, a federal marketing order stated that Walla Walla Sweet Onions can be grown only within the Walla Walla Valley, between the Tucannon River in the north and just over the Oregon border in the south.

Walla Walla Certified Sweet Onions have grown dramatically in popularity in recent years because they add terrific flavor raw to so many dishes without the tears and heat associated with hybrid onions. Sweetness in onions is determined by their pungency. A high sulphur content from pyruvic acid results in high pungency, masking the natural sweetness. Walla Walla Sweets are low in sulphur compounds and high in water content, allowing the sugar flavor to come through. They’re mild and crisp and will enhance all kinds of dishes such as salsa, salads and sandwiches. They’re also fantastic grilled with kabobs, burgers and steak. Caramelizing or sautéing these onions further develops their sweetness and makes for mouth-watering appetizers, relishes and toppings. What’s more,

Walla Walla Certified Sweet Onions are fat free, cholesterol free, low in sodium, a good source of dietary fiber and are rich in other healthful benefits.

Walla Walla Certified Sweet Onions are marketed by a partnership between Keystone Fruit Marketing, Inc. and Progressive Produce of Los Angeles, CA, working together to bring the finest fresh produce to the public.
