Port Tampa Bay Goes Bananas As Shipments Resume After 21 Years

Bananas are back at Port Tampa Bay.

After an absence of more than 20 years, a large shipment of Chiquita bananas from Ecuador arrived last week at Port Tampa Bay's new refrigerated warehouse cold storage facility.

Port Logistics Refrigerated Services, which operates the state-of-the-art cold storage facility, received its first shipment of perishable products last Wednesday. Some 3,916 pallets of bananas were delivered from the ship MV Wild Lotus and were unloaded at the berth adjacent to the 135,000-square-foot refrigerated warehouse.

The shipment marked the port’s and Port Logistics Refrigerated Services ability to offer “a new cold supply chain solution to customers in Florida, the Southeast and beyond,” Port Tampa Bay CEO Paul Anderson said in a statement. “It enables us to provide significant savings in their truck delivery costs.”
