Workers At Hunts Point Terminal Produce Market Approve Contract

Workers at the Hunts Point Terminal Produce Market in the Bronx voted on Wednesday to approve a three-year contract, ending a contentious dispute over wage increases and health benefits that had threatened to lead to their first strike in nearly three decades.

The workers voted in favor of the contract by 97 percent, according to their union, Teamsters Local 202. The agreement between the workers and the market, which is made up of about 40 independent merchants but run as a cooperative, was reached on Saturday afternoon, a day before a strike could have disrupted the supply of fresh fruits and vegetables to groceries, bodegas and other businesses across the New York region.

“This is a successful contract; it dealt with all our issues,” said Daniel Kane Jr., president of Local 202.
