Chapel Hill’s Southern Season Eyes Larger Cities For Growth

Could Southern Season become a public company someday?

That’s one scenario that CEO Clay Hamner tells me could be in the cards, as well as a Raleigh location.

The Chapel Hill specialty food store started in an 800-square-foot location in 1975, with its then-owner, Michael Barefoot, the lone employee. Today it does business at a 60,000-square-foot location at University Mall.

The company, purchased in 2011 by TC Capital Fund, a joint venture of Carrboro Capital and Tryon Capital, has added a store near Charleston and is about to open a location in Richmond. According to Hamner, the plan is to get even bigger, starting with a store in Charlotte.
