Lower Carbon & Energy Footprint With Greenware Cold-Drink Cups

Kalamazoo, Mich. – Fabri-Kal, a pioneer in innovative new product development, is pleased to affirm findings from a recent study which revealed that cold-drink cups made with Ingeo™ biopolymer have a smaller environmental footprint than similar cups made from polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene terephtalate (PET). Fabri-Kal’s market-leading Greenware® cold-drink cups and portion cups are made with Ingeo™ biopolymer, the new generation of plastics, made from renewable plant material – not oil. The study confirms research previously conducted by a team of scientists at Fabri-Kal, led by Senior Engineer Dave McIntosh, who also found that Ingeo™-based products themselves have a lower carbon and energy footprint than similar products made from traditional petroleum-based resins.

Traditionally designed to be composted for the most favorable life cycle impact, the study performed by PE Americas found that Ingeo™-based drink cups actually have a lower carbon footprint due to sourcing, which proved to be the key driver in the study. Greenware® products made with Ingeo™ biopolymer are 100% compostable in actively managed municipal or industrial facilities, where available. Composting Greenware® products reduces material otherwise headed for the landfill – resulting in a decreased disposal cost. McIntosh commented, “The data presented in this study is consistent with our research and validates the conclusions we have drawn with regards to the life cycle analysis of drink cups made with Ingeo™ PLA biopolymer.” McIntosh continued, “We are extremely pleased that this study affirms the validity of our research and of our Greenware® product, though we want to emphasize that all Fabri-Kal products fulfill a diverse value proposition in terms of value, clarity and customer perception.”

Greenware® annually renewable cold-drink cups, portion cups and lids are made entirely from plants – not petroleum. Made in the U.S. from Ingeo™ biopolymer, the Greenware® product line is 100% compostable in actively managed municipal or industrial facilities, where available.
