Star Market Chain Will Double In Size With Conversions Of Some Shaw's Stores

When I learned back in 2006 that the Star Market in Newtonville would be changing over to a Shaw’s, I thought that the end was finally near for the Star Market brand.

The chain had been slowly whittled away since it was placed under the Shaw’s Supermarkets umbrella after an acquisition in 1999 when there were nearly 50 Star Market stores. Giving up its arguably most visible location, one that spans the Mass. Turnpike, seemed like a point of no return. It was only a matter of time, I thought, that Star Market would go the way of Bread & Circus.

Well, I’m glad I didn’t try to write Star Market’s obituary back then.
