Vegetarian Menus Flexed Some Muscle In 2010

Vegetarians saw the wind blow — gently — in their direction this year, as vegetarian and vegan dining continued to transition from the high road to the middle of the road.

That is to say, vegetarian options became routine menu inclusions at even the most dedicated meat-centric establishments.

Pork may be king, or at least prince, at Longman & Eagle, a Logan Square gastropub, yet diners can also tuck into butternut-squash risotto (fabulous, by the way) or ricotta gnudi. Highlighting the small-plates menu at Sable, a hipster hangout in River North, is a wonderful lentil cake.

Other notable restaurants with vegetarian options include Nana, Anteprima and the recently opened Saigon Sisters. And at this year's Lollapalooza, which featured impressive culinary offerings from well-known restaurants, menu boards matter-of-factly noted those dishes that were vegetarian, vegan and/or gluten-free.
