TURNERS FALLS, Mass — The village of Turners Falls has had a long history of commercial fishing dating back to the early 1700′s when Atlantic Salmon was a major source of commerce.
But Turners Falls signature dam, built in 1798, was the beginning of the end of salmon fishing along the tributaries of the Connecticut River.
Most people don’t know the rich history of Turners Falls. Site of the states first ‘Big Dig’ when the falls were expanded to supply more hydroelectric power, Turners Falls is now leading the way in the world of Aquaculture. All thanks to a tasty fish, with a funny sounding name.
“We’ve taken something that nobody even heard of in North America, said Josh Goldman, Founder and CEO of Australis. ”Barramundi is known as the premier fish of Australia. So there was a market, but it wasn’t here.”
