Firms Pay Fines For Seafood Overcharges In Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection said 10 companies accused of overcharging Wisconsin consumers for frozen seafood have agreed to pay fines totaling more than $100,000.

The agency said an investigation found 157 violations of short-weighing seafood at 23 grocery stores in Fond du Lac, Outagamie, Shawano, Racine, Rock and Walworth counties. None of the companies admitted to the violations, largely the result of including the weight of ice applied to frozen seafood prior to packaging.

Packers are allowed to add an ice glaze to preserve quality, but the weight of the ice cannot be included in the labeled weight that's charged to consumers.
