FOLEY, Alabama — The vision of starting a large-scale, year-round seafood and farmers’ market is coming into focus for the city as a design firm joined the project this week.
The City Council on Monday night approved the hiring of Watkins Acy Strunk Designs Inc. of Foley for design services. The contract is for $18,000 and will be paid for through a BP grant.
Late last year the city applied for and was awarded a $317,500 grant for the farmers' market through the Gulf Tourism and Seafood Promotional Fund, a $57 million fund created by BP to promote Gulf Coast tourism and seafood industries in states impacted by the 2010 oil spill.
Working with the Alabama Farmers Market Authority, the city plans to build a fresh market for farmers and fishermen on a 30-acre, city-owned pecan grove off Baldwin County 20, adjacent to Wolf Bay Lodge. Faulkner State Community College is also partnering in the project and will provide education programs with the hopes of creating a farm-to-school program.
