Chimney Cake Island Brings Hungary's Oldest Pastry To Chicago

The sweets craze is nothing new to Chicagoans. We've eaten our way through the cupcake craze and the doughnut craze.

How about chimney cakes? Though this pastry originated in Hungary (specifically Translyvania, which is in modern-day Romania) and is known to be the oldest pastry of the country, it now has a home in Chicago. Chimney Cake Island has brought its version of the famous pastry to the Edgewater neighborhood.

Chimney cakes, or kurtoskalacs, are spirals of dough that have been wrapped around a cylinder, covered with sugar and cooked on a rotating spit until the sugar coating has caramelized into a crisp crust.
