Grassland Dairy Products Going Strong Since 1904

GREENWOOD — It is most certainly a family affair: The nation’s largest family owned butter processor — 60,000 pounds per hour — is owned by the Wuethrich family.

The company produces butter from milk provided by 850 family dairy farmers, which is consumed by families across the country.

Grassland Dairy Products sits like a huge ship in the desert, but in this case, it’s a huge creamery located in the midst of rich farmland just outside of Greenwood, in the state’s leading dairy county.

The Wuethrich family has been churning butter at this location for 110 years. In 1904, John S. Wuethrich, who earlier had been making butter for the N.C. Foster Lumber Co.-owned cheese factory at Greenwood, took over management of the Farmers Progressive Creamery, just east of that small farming town.
