Wisconsin Still Number One In Cheese Production, But The Lead Is Slimming

Wisconsin had a larger increase in cheese production than the nation as a whole in March – but the state’s lead over second-place California got slimmer.

New figures show that Wisconsin made just over 231-million pounds of cheese in March. That’s the most of any state, and it was up two-point-seven percent from the same month a year ago. California had a larger increase than Wisconsin at three-point-three percent, with a total cheese output of 193 million pounds. Both states surpassed the national increase of two-point-four percent.

Total U-S cheese production was 916-million pounds in March. The Badger State made 11-percent more Italian cheese – but there were double-digit decreases for American and Cheddar cheeses.
