2012 New Varieties From Sakata

Can Can Cocktail Party Dianthus caryophyllus

Can Can Cocktail Party Dianthus caryophyllus is a top-quality carnation that will brighten up any landscape border, patio container or bedding area. Large, brightly colored blooms offer a delicate scent from mid-spring well into summer. This mix includes an array of popular hues that include burgundy, purple, salmon, scarlet and rose pink. Expect plants to reach a height of 18” with a spread of 8”. Excellent basal branching on strong cut flower quality stems is consistent with Can Can Cocktail Party’s sister—the AAS 2003 and FleuroSelect Gold Medal Winner Can Can Scarlet. This long-awaited addition from Sakata Ornamentals is a cool crop, requiring little or no heat in the greenhouse.

Majestic Giant II Rose with Blotch Improved Pansy

Majestic Giant II Rose with Blotch Improved Pansy offers a more compact and dwarf plant habit along with shorter stems when compared to the original variety. A deeper, more intense color is well matched to the Majestic Giant II series, which retains a compact habit from autumn through spring, offering 4” blooms on a variety less affected by temperature and light. Also note how this line requires little or no plant growth regulator. Pots fill out quickly so frequent turns are possible in the greenhouse. Plants will reach a height of 8”, and a spread of 10” which also makes this variety a great landscape option in cooler temperatures.

Dynamite Blue Jeans Pansy

Dynamite Blue Jeans Pansy is a wonderful option in the large-flowered pansy category. Strong color contrasting blooms face upwards on a plant offering a compact habit that matches the balance of the Dynamite series. This vigorous grower will reach a height of 6” with a spread of 8” while still maintaining its petite size. Dynamite Blue Jeans from Sakata Ornamentals is a great choice in the landscape as well as for fall or spring containers.

New Vegetative Varieties
Cape Daisy™ Fire Burst Osteospermum

Sakata Ornamental’s Cape Daisy™ line is in store for a double shot of color! Cape Daisy™ Fire Burst Osteospermum offers a unique range of hues that begin with a coppery yellow that shifts to a copper red as the bloom matures. A spectacular, unique range of colors! Cape Daisy™ Purple Osteospermum offers new pastel purple blooms that deepen with time to a brilliant dark purple color. Both varieties offer a well-branched and compact habit with a quick production time.

SuperCal® Pink Ice xPetchoa

The ever-popular SuperCal® line continues to expand, now with the addition of SuperCal® Pink Ice xPetchoa. Clear, cool pink blooms and a compact, spreading habit will brighten up any combination container, and will also quickly fill a hanging basket or window box. Pink Ice offers the same strong performance that growers have come to depend on in the SuperCal® line which now has eight colors. Known for its unique colors and large flowers, SuperCal® from Sakata brings together the best traits of petunia and calibrachoa; it is pH tolerant, day length neutral and can be grown cool. The foliage is not sticky so flowers drop easily from the plant as they age.

SunPatiens® Spreading Carmine Red

Sakata’s list of new introductions would not be complete without an addition to the ever-popular SunPatiens® line. SunPatiens® Spreading Carmine Red will make a strong statement in 10 or 12” hanging baskets, gallons or mixed containers. Matched in habit to Spreading Corona, this plant will reach a height and spread of 24-36”, and is a wonderful choice for mixed or monoculture baskets and containers. Gardeners continue to be amazed at SunPatiens® tolerance of sun, heat and humidity, while growers love how this line roots in 2 weeks vs. 4 and can finish cool—reducing costs and increasing turns in the greenhouse.

Side Show™ Yellow Glow Osteospermum

Growers will appreciate the true yellow color of Side Show™ Yellow Glow Osteospermum in addition to this variety’s tolerance of a wide range of growing conditions. No pinching is needed, and only a small amount of PGR will keep this plant’s compact habit in place. Easy to grow, this garden classic from Sakata Ornamentals offers blooms that keep coming even during the heat of the season, while also staying open under low light conditions. Gardeners will love how this variety brightens up a container on the patio, and adds waves of mass color to a dark corner of the landscape.
