Papa Cantella's Recalls Chicken Sausages For Misbranding & Undeclared Allergen

WASHINGTON – Papa Cantella's Inc., a Vernon, Calif. establishment, is recalling approximately 456 pounds of chicken sausages because of misbranding and an undeclared allergen, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The product being recalled contains walnuts, a known allergen, which is not noted on the label.

The products subject to recall includes: [View Label]:

16-oz. packages of "CANTELLA'S FULLY COOKED CHICKEN SAUSAGE WITH APPLES," bearing the identifying lot numbers of "10191100" or "10191100R" and sell/freeze by dates of "12/03/2011" or "12/06/2011."

Each package bears the establishment number "P-6016" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The product subject to recall was produced on Oct. 19, 2011, and distributed to retail establishments in the Southern California area. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on FSIS' website at www.fsis.usda.gov/FSIS_Recalls/
Open_Federal_Cases/index.asp.

The problem was discovered through a consumer complaint brought to the attention of the company. The company believes incorrect labels were applied as a result of a production scheduling error. FSIS and the company have received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.

Consumers and news reporters with questions about the recall should contact the company's vice president, Tony Cantella, at (800) 727-2676, Ext. 106.

Consumers with food safety questions can "Ask Karen," the FSIS virtual representative available 24 hours a day at AskKaren.gov.
