Red Meat Production Down 20%

CHEYENNE — According to a release by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture's Wyoming field office, commercial red meat production during May of 2010 totaled 400,000 pounds, equal to April's production, but 20 percent less than May 2009 production.

"Commercial red meat" includes total beef, veal, pork, lamb and mutton, but excludes animals slaughtered on the farm.

The drop in production is a result of both quantity and quality in beef production. This May, 100 fewer cattle were slaughtered compared to last May, and their average live weight was down 24 pounds from the previous year.

Hog production also was down by 100 head, but the animals weighed an average of 289 pounds, up 26 pounds from 2009.
