Small Poultry Farms To Get Bigger Sales

Sterling, Conn. — In the 12 years since Rick Hermonot established the Ekonk Hill Turkey Farm off Route 49, a quirk in state regulations limited his turkey sales to individuals.

The law did not provide for state inspection of small poultry farms like Ekonk Hill, so they were not allowed to make bulk sales of their pasture-grown turkeys to restaurants, farm stands or even to the friendly neighborhood grocer.

Thanks to the efforts of some state legislators, that situation has changed.

New rules

Legislation enacted during the last session of the General Assembly now provides for inspections of the “smaller” farms by representatives of the state Department of Agriculture. With the inspections, the farms will now have the ability to make bulk sales.
