LOS ANGELES – Giumarra Wenatchee will bring a new pear to the market by becoming the exclusive North American supplier for the Angélys pear, grown in New Zealand by Freshmax.
Giumarra will market limited supplies of Angélys this summer, with initial availability in mid-June. The pear has strong consumer appeal, with a sweet, bold flavor profile. Its smooth, bronze skin has a unique pink blush and the pear’s fine flavor is accompanied by a delicious aroma.
“This is the first time this variety will be available in the U.S. market,” says Mr. Jason Bushong, Division Manager for Giumarra Wenatchee. “We think there is great potential growth with Angélys because of its unique characteristics and superb flavor. Consumers are really looking for flavor, and this pear will deliver.”
Mr. Bushong also noted that the pear has exceptional shelf life and storability.
Angélys was initially bred in France and is grown in the Nelson region of New Zealand. This year’s program will offer trial volumes from June through August. Additional production is already planned for future seasons following the pear’s success in the New Zealand and French markets.
“Summer will provide a great opportunity to merchandise the pear in unique ways, either by itself or as part of a larger summer fruit display featuring multiple items,” says Mr. Scott Ross, Eastern Region Business Manager for the Giumarra Companies. “Educating consumers on its key attributes generates interest and leads to repeat purchases.”
