Peruvian Asparagus Importer’s Association Launches 2012/2013 Fresh Peruvian Asparagus Season

Helping promote retail sales in the new economy is a primary focus of the Peruvian Asparagus Importer’s Association (PAIA) as importers begin the 2012/2013 season.

Peru enables U.S. retailers and consumers’ access to asparagus at times when domestic supply does not exist since 90% of Peru’s production is focused when domestic producers are not in season.  In 2011, Peru alone exported over 189 million pounds of fresh asparagus into the United States. With an export history dating back 25 years, Peruvian imports continue to be a major source of asparagus for U.S. retailers and their customers.

As Peru launches the 2012/13 season, PAIA importers are partnering with retailers and discussing strategies for promotions for the upcoming summer season.

“Our customers are looking forward to a strong season, especially with the variety of presentations offering strong value for Peruvian asparagus,” says Chris Martin, PAIA Co-Chair West Coast and President of Gourmet Trading. “We anticipate stronger sales in the asparagus category as we offer quality product with very promotable volume.”

“We project that Peruvian asparagus demand will be solid throughout the summer months and into the peak season,” says Walter Yager, PAIA Co-Chair East Coast and CEO of Alpine Fresh.  “Regardless of the dip in volumes, we envision promotable quantity throughout the season.”

Priscilla Lleras, PAIA Coordinator adds, “PAIA diligently and cohesively works with industry and government agencies to advance standards of product quality, cold chain management practices and logistics, so importers can meet customers’ requirements to supply  consumers with a  value, quality and convenience.”

The association will focus even greater efforts in 2012 on spreading the positive word to industry trade press, supermarkets and consumers concerning the benefits of fresh asparagus through articles, advertisements, direct-communication, and trade show participation.  The association anticipates increasing consumption and demand for fresh asparagus in 2012/2013.
