Albertsons Buys Gordmans Building In East Boise. Here’s What It Says About Its Plans

The former Gordmans department store in East Boise has sat vacant since it closed last year after Gordmans declared bankruptcy. Now a new use for at least some of the space is in the works.

Albertsons has bought the 108,000-square-foot space. But it appears unlikely the Boise grocer will open a store there. That's because Albertsons already operates a grocery store five doors down in the same strip mall, the South Shore Shopping Center, at 1001 E. ParkCenter Blvd. And Albertsons last month announced plans to spend $230,000 to remodel that store.

Instead, Albertsons has told the city that it will use about half of the Gordmans space, 50,000 square feet, as an office, for research activities and as a"prototype store," according to a permit application filed with Boise Planning and Development Services.
