TORONTO – Retail Council of Canada applauds the announcement by the federal government of changes to protect food safety.
"We support the announcement by Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz," said Dave Wilkes, Senior Vice President of RCC's grocery division. "Food safety is the primary concern of Canada's grocery retailers; it is the foundation upon which all other priorities are built."
Minister Ritz announced the Safe Food for Canadians Act, intended to strengthen and modernize the food safety system. The Act will consolidate the Fish Inspection Act, the Canada Agricultural Products Act, the Meat Inspection Act, and the food provisions of the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act.
"Canada's retail grocers share the government's commitment to protect the health and safety of Canadian consumers," said Wilkes. "We look forward to continuing to work with the federal government."
