ANDERSON — At least two regional grocery-store chains are scaling back their self-checkout lines, but the trend has yet to affect major Upstate grocers, representatives say.
Big Y Foods and Albertsons both plan to reduce their self-checkout lines, which require only a machine with an automated voice and touch screen to pay for groceries. Both chains are outside the Southeast, and have added more clerks to make up for fewer self-checkout lines, the Associated Press reported.
Spokesmen for Ingles, Bi-Lo and Publix say they want to continue giving shoppers a choice in how they pay.
“We are very happy with our self-checkout lines and get a lot of positive comments from our customers,” said Ingles spokesman Ron Freeman. “Our larger store sizes allow us to provide customers with a choice of both traditional and self-check options. We do not have any plans to change.”
