BMEA & Its Partners Make Progress In Protecting Bahamian Lobster Fishery

The Bahamas is known to have some of the most pristine waters and bountiful marine resources in the region. These resources are a vital part of Bahamian culture and its economy. The highest-valued marine resource that contributes significantly to the Bahamian economy is the spiny lobster (Panulirus argus).

The Bahamas is currently one of the leading producers of spiny lobster tails in the world earning about 70 million dollars or more per year.

Due to the high demand for Bahamian spiny lobster both domestically and internationally, unsustainable fishing practices have occurred that place pressure on lobster populations which ultimately affect landings as well as cause negative impacts on the marine ecosystem.
