Lunds & Byerlys Join Growing List Of BAP Retail Adopters

The Global Aquaculture Alliance has added additional supermarket chains to the growing list of retailers, foodservice operators and distributors that have adopted GAA’s Best Aquaculture Practices certification for farmed seafood.

Lunds and Byerly’s recently confirmed their commitment to the BAP program and will work with their suppliers to achieve compliance with GAA standards for sustainable aquaculture. Lunds and Byerly’s are planning an aggressive marketing campaign around the launch of their Responsibly Sourced Seafood Program, which began March 10.

Lunds and Byerly’s are an upscale, family-owned grocery chain in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area of Minnesota, USA. The chain operates 21 stores under the Lunds and Byerly’s banners.

“We realize that sustainable seafood choices are important to our consumers,” said Bea James, senior manager of organic, natural and sustainable programs at Lunds and Byerly’s. “We are committed to developing a program that helps educate our customers about how well-managed sustainable aquaculture can help reverse the global seafood crisis.”

The Global Aquaculture Alliance is proud to add Lunds and Byerly’s to the ever-expanding list of retailers that are taking a role in changing the course of aquaculture production around the world.

“Our BAP standards program is a manifestation of how the marketplace can make a positive difference on a global scale,” GAA Vice President of Global Market Development Peter Redmond said. “The growth of sustainable aquaculture is at the heart of GAA, and every endorsement of our standards gives us increased comfort with the future of aquaculture.

“We are proud to welcome the efforts put forth by Lunds and Byerly’s. The depth of their Responsibly Sourced Seafood Program will put them in a true leadership position with their customers.”
