National Fisheries Institute Statement on the Passing of Martin Mitchell

WASHINGTON, DC – For Marty Mitchell, the science of food safety was a profession and a passion.  He was a dedicated expert in fields ranging from microbiology to chemical analysis.  However, he was more than just a technician.  He was an entrepreneur, building a local business of 20 employees to a global operation of 2,000 associates.

Many of us knew him as a supporter and friend of the seafood community as the managing director of Certified Laboratories, but his resume reveals the depth of his knowledge and the breadth of his work.  His leadership spanned several industries as the former chair of the American Spice Trade Association’s technical group, as well as, the American Council of Independent Laboratories and the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) refrigerated and frozen food division.  He was also the former director of the National Coalitions of Food Importers Association.

The seafood community mourns the loss of an accomplished technologist and an ally. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues.

Marty Mitchell passed away on December 19, 2021.
