Restaurant Owner Criticizes Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch List

The Seafood Watch list created by the Monterey Bay Aquarium is coming under fire by the owner of an East Cost restaurant chain, who's describing it as an effort at "brainwashing."

Roger Berkowitz, president and CEO of Legal Sea Foods in Massachusetts, will co-host "Sustainable Seafood" with the Culinary Guild of New England later this month, where tiger shrimp, cod and hake will be served — all items the aquarium advises people not to eat.

"A lot of people have been brainwashed," Berkowitz told The Gloucester Times this week. "There's no scientific basis for what they are saying. Restaurants and chefs don't understand any of this when Monterey comes to them."

Not so, says Ken Peterson, communications director for the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
