Why Salad Bars May Never Come Back

It was never the fanciest meal and wasn’t always the tastiest. But in the before times, lunch at the grocery store salad bar was a quick and convenient stop for people who were in a rush or had run out of other ideas. Now, it’s looking like the salad bar lunch may have disappeared for good.

New Jersey grocery stores and some other retail businesses that were forced to shut down self-service food stations like buffets and salad bars because of the coronavirus can now open them up again, Gov. Phil Murphy’s office announced Wednesday.

Tour de Fresh Provides 51 New Salad Bars To U.S. Schools

From October 12-16, nearly 50 cyclists from the fresh fruit & vegetable industry embarked on a 300+ mile ride throughout California to raise funds to provide children more access to fresh fruits and vegetables in schools. This year, with the help of generous donations, Tour de Fresh cyclists plan to deliver 51 salad bars to schools in California, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas.

Seventeen Michigan schools are receiving salad bars to increase fresh, healthy options courtesy of United Fresh Start Foundation and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. The salad bars are part of the national Salad Bars to Schools initiative, which provides equipment and resources to increase children’s fruit and vegetable consumption.
