Chabaso Bike Riders Hit The Road For Smilow Cancer Hospital

NEW HAVEN, CONN – At least fifteen Team Chabaso bike riders tested their mettle along with some of the best peddlers in Connecticut on Saturday, September 10th, when they joined the first annual “Closer to Free” Bike Ride Fundraiser outside Yale Bowl for the benefit of the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven. The goal of the ride was three-fold: to raise money for cancer-cure research, raise awareness of better cancer care throughout Connecticut, and for voluntary riders to test their endurance in pursuit of pure cycling enjoyment.

Team Chabaso was sponsored by Chabaso Bread Company, a popular New Haven artisan bakery. The team was captained by Chabaso’s founder and CEO Charlie Negaro, an avid cyclist. The team traversed the scenic Connecticut coastline through twelve towns on a 100-mile route and back to the Yale Bowl complex where riders, volunteers and the public were invited to a celebration finale featuring refreshments and entertainment.

Chabaso also donated hundreds of loves of bread to the post ride gathering. In addition, ride participants enjoyed plentiful samples of whole grain breads, a perfectly healthful and delicious accompaniment to the nutritional demands of competitive cycling both during and after what will be a challenging event for many riders.
