IL Dept. Of Public Health: Ropp Jersey Cheese Being Recalled

Ropp Jersey Cheese, LLC, located at 2676 Ropp Road, Normal, Illinois is voluntarily recalling some of its cheese products because the products may contain antibiotics. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) discovered the problem during a routine review of the plants antibiotic screening log, which indicated the products were not being tested as required.

Salmonella-Contaminated Egg Farm Still Not Compliant With FDA Rules

The federal Food and Drug Administration has sent a letter to Quality Egg LLC (operator of Wright County Egg) outlining continuing violations of shell egg regulations. The FDA also informed Quality Egg that they are not to sell eggs for human consumption until the violations have been rectified.

Site Preparation Under Way For $100 Million Yogurt Plant In TN

General Mills Incorporated (NYSE:GIS) (Minneapolis, Minnesota) has begun excavation in preparation for the expansion of a food processing plant in Murfeesboro, Tennessee. General Mills is investing $100 million to expand yogurt production at the facility, which also manufactures breakfast foods. Dubbed “Project Queen,” it is partly in response to double-digit rates of growth for yogurt products at grocery stores.

FDA Releases Five-Year Strategic Priorities Plan, Calls For Comments

Late last month, the Food and Drug Administration released a draft document outlining the agency’s strategic priorities and program goals for the next five years. Implementing a comprehensive food safety system that focuses on prevention and improved nutrition is listed as one of four key priorities. IDFA expects that issuing guidelines on front-of-package labeling and encouraging the food industry to reduce sodium content in products will be high on FDA’s to-do list in the coming year.
