Village Farms Celebrates First Annual 'BC Veggie Day'

Village Farms celebrated the first annual ‘BC Veggie Day’ on March 20th, 2014 sponsored by British Columbia Greenhouse Growers Association (BCGGA) in conjunction with and funded by the BC Ministry of Agriculture at a total cost of $200,000 to celebrate locally BC greenhouse grown vegetables.  The kick-off event, ‘BC Veggie Day Bash’, will take place at the Vancouver Art Gallery north plaza from 11am to 2pm on Georgia Street in downtown Vancouver.  Highlights of this event include a farmers market, live entertainment, a pop-up greenhouse and ‘good bug’ factory focusing on the sustainable and environmentally friendly methods of greenhouse growing.  Dirk De jong, Head Farmer at Village Farms Delta, BC greenhouses will be on hand along with several other Village Farms growers to talk with event goers about locally grown greenhouse produce.

In addition, Village Farms will feature a ‘BC Greenhouse Grown’ seal on their tomato packaging sold to local retailers throughout the greater Vancouver area so consumers can easily identify locally grown produce.  According to Dirk de Jong, Vice President and Regional Facility Manager  for Village Farms, “We are pleased to be part of the first annual BC Veggie Day celebration.  There is no doubt BC consumers want to support locally grown products as well as BC farmers.  As one of the largest producers of greenhouse grown tomatoes in BC we are happy to give consumers the information they desire, and we want to thank BCGGA for initiating the first annual BC Veggie day in celebration of greenhouse grown”.
