In the weekend of 19-21 October, the fourth edition of ExpoPlantas, the Colombian Nursery Trade Show took place in Fusagasugá, Colombia. With 80 exhibitors from eight countries and 1,000 professional visitors, the show exceeded expectations. With the recent rise in raw goods and production costs, the lowly quart container is starting to look more economically appealing. Whether it be as an easy impulse buy or a promotional item, customers see the potential in this smaller input. They like the idea of being able to mix and match varieties to obtain more diversity. While not all perennials are appropriate for small containers, Syngenta’s perennial offering has several appropriate products for small container production. 

Research Shows Consumers Prefer Plants With The Most Flower Buds and Treated With Largo

Research conducted by the research agency “Into the minds” shows that no less than 80 percent of respondents prefer plants with many  flower buds and are also willing to pay more for it. In addition, the research showed that consumers prefer the plants treated with Largo and find it important that the plant looks healthy when purchased. This meant having sufficient buds, green leaves and fresh colours. Consumers consider the pot size and the length of the stems to be less important when purchasing.

It was not long ago that perennials were first finding their place on the retail shelf. Back then, perennial plants were offered in quart containers near the back of the garden center. As the benefits of using perennials in the landscape became more well-known by the consumer, production started to shift to larger containers.
