AMSA 72nd RMC Innovation at the Cellular Level – Cell-Based Protein Speakers Announced

Champaign IL – The American Meat Science Association (AMSA) is pleased to announce, Dr. Paul Mozdziak, Dr. Kate Krueger, and Brian Spears will be the featured speakers at the AMSA 72nd Reciprocal Meat Conference (RMC) Symposium entitled “Innovation at the Cellular Level – Cell-Based Protein,” on Monday, June 24 in Loveland, CO sponsored by Cargill. The AMSA 2019 RMC is co-hosted by Colorado State University and JBS USA Food Company.

The featured presentations include:

  • An Overview of Animal Cell Culture Technology applied to Food Production: Animal cell culture is a classical and core laboratory technique that arguably dates to the late 1800’s. Currently, animal cell culture is employed as a biomanufacturing platform to produce a wide-range of therapeutics used in human medicine, such as influenza vaccine.  Presently, there is an increasing amount of interest in applying modifications of biomanufacturing strategies currently used to produce therapeutics to the production of food products. In this presentation, Dr. Paul Mozdziak, Professor at North Carolina State University, will focus on describing the current strategies and limitations for producing animal-based food products using biomanufacturing techniques.
  • Cellular Agriculture: A New Frontier: Cellular Agriculture is the use of cell cultures for food production. Dr. Kate Krueger, Research Director at New Harvest, will discuss the different types of cellular agriculture, exploring early successes, and ongoing challenges. She will examine the importance of cellular agriculture research to support the field’s continued development.
  • Rapid Development of Cell-Cultured Meat – Muscle, Fat & Connective Tissue: Cultured meat describes meat that has been grown in cultivators outside of an animal’s body. In this presentation Brian Spears, co-founder and CEO of New Age Meats, will describe how they do this at New Age Meats, and how their approach of automation and data science speeds up the research, development, and production of cell-cultured meat.

The AMSA 72nd RMC will be held June 23-26, 2019 at the Embassy Suites in Loveland, CO. For more information regarding theAMSA 72nd RMC please visit: http://www.meatscience.org/rmc or contact Deidrea Mabry 1-800-517-AMSA ext. 12.
