Oxnard, CA –  Deardorff Family Farms begins another new season with our partner grower in Salinas. Building on a successful 2015 season, the Deardorff family and the Bunn family – both fourth generation growers with over seventy years of farming experience – have been able to create a program that offers year round availability. The company has continued adding variety to its product mix while offering consistent, high quality products to customers.

Salinas is now in its second week of harvest loading at Salinas Valley Cooling. In addition to white cauliflower, purple and orange varieties are in the ground. Tyler Clear of the Organics Sales team comments, “Just in time for the desert organic deals to finish up, we have begun Salinas harvest on broccoli and cauliflower, with purple and orange cauliflower to follow in the next few weeks. The Salinas program compliments our Oxnard and Mexico production regions, which are coming along nicely for the transition. All three regions are showing excellent quality.”

Salinas bunching items - kales and chards in all colors - as well as mixed lettuce - romaine, red, and green leaf - will be available starting in May. Bunching items will be available through July, and mixed lettuce through November.

Celery production in Ventura County is going strong. Currently at its halfway point, harvests will finish in June, when the crop will transition back to Salinas through November. Mixed lettuce, kales, cabbage, cilantro, parsley, spinach, and cauliflower will continue to be offered in Ventura County through the summer months.

Tom Deardorff, II comments, “The El Nino weather pattern has caused a varied mix of supply gaps, over production, and quality issues for many organic shippers.  For us, we have been able to supply our customers with high quality product on a consistent basis due to the fact we pull product from various regions from San Quintin, Mexico to Salinas, California.  By starting our Salinas program this early, we will again be able to meet customer needs through the Spring and Summer of 2016.”
