Oregon Closes Crabbing From Coos Bay To California
by Lynne Terry, Oregonian

A toxin is creeping up the coast of Oregon, prompting the state to close crabbing from Coos Bay to California.

This is the third closure of recreational and commercial crabbing since Oct. 20, when state agricultural officials banned crabbing from Cape Blanco to California. Three days later it extended the ban to Bandon and now Coos Bay.

State test show the crabs have unsafe levels of domoic acid, which can cause anything from gastrointestinal symptoms to death. Domoic acid cannot be killed by cooking, freezing or in the microwave.
